No Sound – “To the Core”

…And then…out of nowhere, NoSound is back! And with a new epic and impassioned EP, To the Core. The EP will be released June 27, 2025, on the Kscope and Burning Shed labels.

To The Core is a deeply reflective and despairing album of five songs full of emotion. The Italian project, Nosound, is led by Giancarlo Erra, who has called for a return to the band’s core, from earlier in their career as musicians. It is a more organic instrumentation and sound, while maintaining streamlined song structures.

NoSound is made up of members: Giancarlo Erra (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Paolo Vigliarolo (guitars), Marco Berni (keyboards), Orazio Fabbri (bass), and Daniele Michelacci (drums).

Giancarlo Erra describes To the Core: “I always prefer to play a song again because it was beautiful but too short, rather than wonder why it goes on for so long without saying anything new.” The record was written and produced entirely by Erra, who returned to organic instrumentation for To the Core .

“The Nothing We Gave”, opens with Giancarlo’s signature shredding electric guitar, soft piano and keyboards. He sings, “The silence stretched but never passed though. Why should I stay if you’re already gone?” A sad almost hymn, filled with deep standing bass and strings. Giancarlo sings, “Just keep me here. And just for a while. I’m drifting again, barely alive”. A sad song of regrets from losing someone very close.

The title song, “To the Core”, opens with thoughtful piano, and Giancarlo singing, “Are you the same man that I used to fear. Can you tell me now what I long to hear? What did you say? Why did you leave me that way? I loved you so much. I just never chose the right way. Why does it hurt this way? I feel it to the core. I just never know what to say”. The sadness that all of us experience from the loss of a family member or someone very close. A difficult but important feeling that we all experience. Giancarlo expresses how we all feel at these desperate times, when we can’t fix a relationship, because it is over, or bring someone back from beyond. Unbelievable emotional strain can be heard and felt through Giancarlo’s voice.

“Worn-Out Parts”, is the first single, and it includes an accompanying music video. The video uses winter scenery to help depict the feeling of aging. It is the longest song, at over 5 minutes. Giancarlo sings with soft acoustic guitar and Louise Pigott supporting, with a warm backing vocal. Giancarlo sings, “Light collapsed through broken glass. Falling skies, a distant past. Eyes closed, searching for. Fragments of a fractured fall. Worn out hearts/parts. Broken path/heart. Silent nights/fights. Time unfolds without a trace. Broken stars, forgotten space. Veins of stone beneath the skin. Buried deep, where life begins”. The lyrics are extraordinarily deep and soul-searching, as they are on every NoSound album.  A powerful story of aging, and feeling that slowly grinding wheel of time. I can almost visualize, “As slowly turns the grinding wheel”, as Giancarlo sings. Maybe a distant shout out to In the Court of the Crimson King.

“Interrupt”, opens with soft pleading piano. Giancarlo sings, with accompaniment of deep bass, “And when you fall along the way. It’s when you think you lost again. Against a rock, the tick and tock”. Time has always been a focus of NoSound’s music. And this song touches upon that reality we all face daily. How to live life to the most, with the time we have before us. The heavy drum beat cadence, towards the end, takes me back to In the Court of the Crimson King again.

“Closure”, starts with a lighter keyboard and drum performance with backing strings. Giancarlo sings, “The train we’re all on. And the stops that we make”. Time, as seen by travelling along a path. Giancarlo fills the soundscape with electric guitar, surrounded by a soundscape of comforting music.

No Sound’s To the Core, is a short, but powerfully emotional return for the band. It is full of sadness and longing for what has been lost. This can come in many forms. People, things, and the way we communicate and work together. How we live or lived. How we prepare and accept the death of a loved one. It is a deep, soulful journey that we all will encounter at one point or another during our lives. Giancarlo is preparing us for that journey, that he has, most likely, already experienced. To the Core, therefore, stands as a powerful statement to the expectations we all endure during these climactic moments of life. Knowing how to use music to sooth these difficult moments is NoSound’s specialty. Give NoSound’s To the Core, your reflective time to confront the events and experiences endured on this album, to prepare yourself to confront similar times in the life ahead.
