Tribute Project Aims to Bring Neil Peart Memorial to Life

Buffalo’s top-rated morning show, Shredd & Ragan of 97 Rock, has launched The Great North American Rush Off, a tribute project honoring legendary drummer Neil Peart of Canadian rock band Rush. The initiative seeks to reignite support for a stalled memorial project in Peart’s hometown of St. Catharines, Ontario, while simultaneously raising $500,000 to fund its construction.

In 2020, St. Catharines City Council voted to name a newly rebuilt pavilion in Lakeside Park after Peart, following an outpouring of public support. However, the broader vision for the Neil Peart Memorial includes more ambitious elements: two bronze sculptures connected by a pathway featuring interpretive displays that celebrate Peart’s life, musicianship, and literary contributions.

Although the memorial received initial enthusiasm, fundraising momentum has diminished in recent years, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, Shredd & Ragan are mobilizing music fans with a nationwide call for Rush cover submissions. Selected tracks will be compiled into digital and physical releases, with all proceeds directed to the memorial effort.

This will be a fitting tribute to Neil and a spectacular monument where fans can gather and share their memories,” noted David DeRocco, spokesperson for the Neil Peart Memorial Committee.

To further drive donations, organizers are promoting a series of sponsorship packages. Notably, individual fans can contribute through the $500 CAD “Wood Level Sponsorship,” which includes a personalized message displayed at the park. If all packages are purchased, the initiative will meet its full funding goal.

According to Michael Parrish of MX2 Media, the mission extends beyond fundraising. “Our goal is to spread awareness that this park exists and needs support. If Rush fans across the globe hear the call, we’re confident they’ll answer.”

Plans are also underway for a charity concert in Buffalo, featuring selected bands from the tribute compilation, as well as a high-profile auction. As the project gathers momentum, organizers remain optimistic that fans’ passion will transform the Neil Peart Memorial from vision to reality.
