Johan Agebjörn – Southern Forest (Constellation Tatsu PURR 0151, 2025)
Swedish electronic music composer returns with Southern Forest, his first solo album of new material in a decade, following 2015’s Notes. Southern Forest is a collection of entrancing nature-themed electronic ambient music, masterfully crafted with analog synths, limited rhythms, and a quiet cinematic feel. The compositions are inspired by the deep forests of Sweden.
The album features three types of styles: trancy electronic music that has deep connections to Berlin-style synth music such as “Their Shadows”, “On the Ground” and “Starwoven”; spellbinding combinations of electronica and spoken word, specifically the deeply mesmerizing “Little Fluffy Clouds”, the outstanding collaboration with synthwave star NINA (also available in instrumental format); and more melodic new age-leaning pieces.
The album features collaborations with well-known German ambient act Dr. Atmo (known for the classic Silence series with Pete Namlook); English electronic music artist Cate Brooks (The Advisory Circle); and fellow Swedes Miranda Magdalena and Mikael Ögren.
Johan Agebjörn is best known for his work with Swedish synthpop artist Sally Shapiro and his releases on labels like Paper Bag and Spotted Peccary. His discography as a solo artist and collaborator includes Music With Less Electricity, Mossebo, The Mountain Lake, Casablanca Nights, Notes, We Never Came To The White Sea, and Artefact.
Johan Agebjörn lives in Lund, Sweden. He’s a psychologist and father. He says: “I make music from time to time.”
