Gates Of Kiev – Gates Of Kiev (Laser’s Edge, 2026)
Dutch progressive rock trio Gates of Kiev has released a fantastic self-titled debut album. This superb recording brings together 1970s symphonic progressive rock influences, organ-fueled Deep Purple-style hard rock, psychedelic music, jazz, and beyond.
The band was founded in the Netherlands by childhood friends Tomas Mesman (organ) and Hessel Braat (drums), whose musical partnership began during their teenage years. Their shared interest in classic rock led to informal late-night sessions in a small garage, where they developed the foundations of their high energy, organ-driven style. The four lengthy pieces feature deep early 1970s progressive rock influences (Emerson Lake and Palmer) and fiery, roaring electric organ and galloping rhythms that you would find in Deep Purple.
The trio has developed an intense live approach characterized by high volume, rapid tempos, and inventive instrumental passages. Although the compositions are predominantly instrumental and often feature extended solo work, when vocals appear, they are wild or eerie as in Il Baletto di Bronzo (another keyboard-propelled act). Notably, the lyrics address personal struggles and social issues, sometimes through humor and occasionally in direct language.
While the first three tracks feature admirable, dazzling keyboard wizardry, track 4, “Drunkship Of The Mice” is beautifully cinematic and mesmerizing. This is thanks to Mesman’s use of varied organ, elegant piano, exquisite Mellotron, synths, and spellbinding atmospheres; as well as the use of creative bass and drums.
Jacob Holm-Lupo of Norwegian progressive rock band White Willow mixed and mastered the album in Norway, while Italian heavy psychedelic rock illustrator Mont Doom created the album artwork.
While active on Amsterdam’s live music circuit, Mesman and Braat met bassist Eszl De Vois, an established musician in the underground psychedelic scene. His interest in unconventional jazz introduced another dimension to the group’s musical approach and completed the trio.

The band’s name reflects its admiration for Emerson, Lake & Palmer, particularly the composition “The Great Gates of Kiev” from the influential live album Pictures at an Exhibition. That recording remains a primary inspiration for the Dutch musicians.
Musicians: Tomas Mesman on keyboards and lead vocals; Eszl de Vois on bass; and Hessel Braat of drums and percussion.
