Sean Wayland
Barrenjoey (Seed, 2012)
Australian-born pianist, composer and keyboardist Sean Wayland is deeply inspired by jazz, funk and rock. His album Barrenjoey is dedicated to his homeland in Australia.
“I was inspired by surfing in Australia, New South Wales Coast, and Australian rock circa 1980,” says Wayland. “The title track is about a tombolo, or tied island, attached to Palm Beach, the most northerly point of the Sydney region.”
Although Barrenjoey contains occasional fusion moments with notable keyboard work, the majority of the recording is essentially inspired by Steely Dan, with similar arrangements and even vocals.
