Hiptronics (Azuremusic, 2014)

Hiptronics is a great indie release from the Netherlands by the band Azure. The group combines exciting jazz fusion, funk, and edgy beats that form a sort of organic trip hop. All the cuts are instrumental except for ‘Ocean’s Edge’ which comes in instrumental and vocal versions.

Azure really stands out when the fusion and electronic elements take a leading role. Highlights include the instrumental version of ‘Ocean’s Edge’ where keyboardist Federico Solazzo delivers outstanding performances on electric piano and synths. The vocal jazz version with Benjamin Rhodes is also quite good although it falters with DNA’s unnecessary rapping at the end.

Another highlight is ‘Dawinul’ where the band plays a tribute to the late keyboard maestro Joe Zawinul.

Although the drum work is stellar throughout the album, David Barker showcases his talent on his piece title ‘DB.’

Guitarist Rogier Schneemann has his opportunity to shine on the fiery fusion piece ‘Burn everything.’

Azure was formed in 2006 when a pianist and a guitar player meet at a spontaneous jam session. Immediately sensing a musical catalyst, they decided to perform together. The two musicians recruited two friends, started composing and gigging, and called the band Azure.

In June 2008 the quartet released the debut album When She Smiles. Producer and synthesizer maestro Federico Solazzo replaced the original composer and pianist. The new lineup recorded Hiptronics. The current band features Rogier Schneemann on guitar; Federico Solazzo on keyboards; David Barker on drums; Luciano Poli on bass and regular collaborator Rik Mol on trumpet.
