New Inventions in The Year the Earth Stood Still

Ari Lehtela – The Year the Earth Stood Still (Tela Guitar, 2021)

North Carolina-based Finnish musician and experimentalist Ari Lehtela’s concept album The Year the Earth Stood Still is dedicated to the unexpected events that happened in 2020.

Lehtela is also a musical instrument builder and came up with new musical instruments used in this recording. Some of these new inventions have odd names such as Search Engine 1x/2x, Hybrid Tango, Long Neck Tela. Lehtela also plays sarod (Indian lute, although this version was made by Lehtela), setar and familiar instruments like bass, synth, piano, harp, and percussion.

The musical pieces pieces on The Year the Earth Stood Still are experimental and may appeal to fans of avant-garde and improvised music.
