Olga Konkova Trio – Open Secret (Losen Records, 2021)
Open Secret is a fantastic contemporary jazz album from Olga Konkova, one of the greatest pianists in the current international scene. This time, Konkova teams up with two extraordinary musicians, Norwegian bass maestro Per Mathisen and British multi-instrumentalist Gary Husband who plays drums on this occasion (he is a superb keyboardist as well).
All the pieces are exquisite, rooted in jazz and classical music. Altogether, the three musicians deliver impeccable performances and memorable interplay. Although Gary Husband can play high-energy fusion, on this album, he frequently uses gentle rhythms, using cymbals and brushes in a delightful way.
On some of the tracks, Konkova switches from acoustic piano to the mesmerizing Fender Rhodes electric piano.
With “Open Secret”, Olga Konkova presents an instrumental set that feels timeless and nonetheless intensely modern.
