XCIII – “Void”

If you want to hear something completely different, and full of cool electronic wave music, please try out XCIII’s new album Void, released January 14, 2022. It is full of metal-like music, set to wave and electronic sounds, filled with guitar and keyboards. There are also some cool background effects and soundscaping and atmospherics that help support the music.

The album was recorded & mixed at Forlorn Hope Studios by XCIII, during 2020-2021. It was mastered by Steve Kitch. The cover artwork was created by Aurélie Raidron, from I Hear Drones.

XCIII is made up of Guillaume Beringer, who plays all instruments, and sings vocals; Maélise Vallez, who sings additional vocals on tracks 2, 3, 5, and 7; Mathieu Devigne, on additional piano on track 6; Giulia Filippi, on additional vocals on track 6; Neemias Teixeira, on additional piano on track 2; Oisava, on additional violin on track 9.

My favorite tracks were: The opener “iR”, with its excellent piano work. “Red Lights”, is a cool, eerie synthesizer masterpiece with added percussion and piano. It is the one single I found for the album, and probably the best song on the album. The video supporting tells the song’s story. The acoustic guitar work on “At Last One Never Exists”, is excellent. “Rosemary” has some excellent electric lead guitar, keyboards, percussion and piano. “Tapeworm”, the longest song, also has some cool guitar work and atmospherics. “VS” has some very cool guitar and violin. The backmasting – like lyrics are interesting sounding.

This is something completely different than  you have probably ever heard. But that can be good, if you give it a chance to change your rhythm. It has elements of progressive rock in it, in that it challenges what you may have listened to all of your life. But that is how we grow. Give this a try. And keep an open mind.
