Nemo – “Les Nouveaux Mondes – 2022”

One of France’s leading progressive rock bands, Nemo has released a new album, Les Nouveaux Mondes,onAugust 29, 2022. Nemo has been one of France’s leading progressive rock bands since their inception back in 2002. Their over 15 years of existence has inspired them to re-lease an updated version of their first albums Les Nouveaux Mondes, from 2002. They have nine studio albums and have shared the stage with such luminary progressive rock bands as: Focus, Adagio, The Flower Kings, 3, Anglagard, Galahad, Carptree, Pat McManus band, Fish, Vanden Plas, and Saga. After a successful run, they decided to take a break in 2015. They are now back to provide a completely re-recorded version of their debut album, updated for 2022, to celebrate their 20th anniversary.

They return with their classic lineup: Jean-Pierre Louveton, on guitar, vocals, bass on “Africa”, and virtual instruments; Guillaume Fontaine, on keyboards and vocals: Lionel B. Guichard, on bass; Jean-Baptiste Itier, on drums. They also have included special guests: Pascal Bertrand, on drums, on “Bataille Navale”; and Benoît Gaignon, on bass on “Bataille Navale”.

The band wanted to recreate this special debut album because, “We are going to tell you a story, an extraordinary story. A story of exploits and discoveries. A story of challenges and progress. We are going to tell you the story of these men who moved the world forward, who pushed back the barriers of the impossible. In these stories, the visionary spirit is at the service of the imagination, and the imagination is an accomplice of progress. The characters we’re about to show you, straight out of fiction, have ignited science and reformed the world…”

I never heard the original version of the album from 2002, but if it was half as good as this re-recorded masterpiece, then I understand why this band is so popular in France and throughout the progressive rock world. This is well-written progressive rock music which stands well with any of the other progressive rock of the era. Think about what was also released back in 2002: Dream Theater’s Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Echolyn’s masterpiece Mei, Sylvan’s masterpiece, Artificial Paradise, Magellan’s Hundred Years Flood, Peter Gabriel’s Up, Glass Hammer’s Lex Rex, Camel’s A Nod and a Wink, and Enchant’s Blink of an Eye; to name a few. I’d gladly place this album in with this group.

Every song on this album is unique and full of well-developed themes and countless virtuoso guitar, drum, bass and keyboard work. My favorite songs were: “The Abyss”, “Tempête”, “Luna”, and especially the drumming and keyboards on the title track, Nouveau Monde”. I absolutely enjoyed the bonus tracks, “Africa” and “Bataille Navale”.

So put your headphones on and drift back to 2002 and enjoy one of the era’s best contributions from France. Everything here is elegant and wonderful, even if you do not understand the French lyrics. The music will overwhelm you.
