Progrock Profiles: Il Volo

Il Volo (not to be confused with the famous operatic pop trio) was an Italian progressive rock band formed in the early 1970s. It was considered a superband, featuring members from other well known acts: Alberto Radius and Gabriele Lorenzi (Formula Tre), Mario Lavezzi (Flora Fauna Cemento, Camaleonti), Bob Callero (Osage Tribe, Duello Madre), Gianni Dall’Aglio (Ribelli), and composer Vince Tempera (Pleasure Machine).

The group released only two excellent albums, Il Volo (Numero Uno, 1974) and Essere o non essere? (Numero Uno, 1975) that were later reissued in various countries.

  1. The second il Volo, especially, is excellent instrumental symphonic progrock with an especially delicate, almost folksy touch.
