RPWL – Crime Scene (2023)
Bavarian art rock band RPWL tackles the theme of human behavior and its dark side on their new album “Crime Scene.” The album examines the end of love, the start of mania, and the boundaries between pathological delusion and criminal meticulousness through themes and stories of real life cases like Karl Denke and Carl Tanzler.
The six tracks of the album are atmospheric and dense, featuring old-school fuzz and heavy elements, with solos serving the composition.
The album’s meticulous sound design raises questions on normalizing violence and freedom. Yogi Lang, the band’s frontman, is drawn to the shadow sides of society and personal life, while guitarist Kalle Wallner wonders about the source of evil, genetics or social factors.
Despite the atmospheric nature, the band has time to inject masterful progressive rock instrumental passages and beautifully-crafted vocal harmonies that allow the listener to take a break from the melancholy.
