Hawkwind has unveiled the commemorative 50th Anniversary edition of their iconic live record, Space Ritual, as announced by Atomhenge, the hub for Hawkwind’s past works.
Captured during the band’s December 1972 tour in the United Kingdom, which followed the launch of their previous studio album, Doremi Fasol Latido, this live performance was a continuous spectacle intertwined with recited poetry by Robert Calvert. It provided an all-encompassing sensory experience, featuring renowned dancers Stacia, Miss Renee, and Tony Carrera, accompanied by a spectacular light show crafted by lighting designer Liquid Len.
The Space Ritual tour followed the tremendous triumph of their “Silver Machine” single (although the song was not included in the live repertoire), and the Pye Records mobile unit recorded three concerts. These recordings resulted in a double album adorned with unforgettable artwork designed by Barney Bubbles, becoming a Top Ten hit in the UK upon its release in May 1973. Now, marking its 50th anniversary, this limited edition deluxe boxed set comprises 10 CDs and a Blu-ray disc. It presents a freshly remastered version of the original album, as well as new mixes of all three complete concerts recorded during the tour at Liverpool Stadium, Sunderland Locarno, and Brixton Sundown, all skillfully mixed by Stephen W Tayler.
The set also includes a 5.1 Surround Sound mix of the album, along with a new stereo mix that incorporates the complete unedited renditions of “Brainstorm” and “Time We Left This World Today,” as well as the encore performance of “You Shouldn’t Do That.”
Accompanying the music is a 68-page illustrated book featuring a new essay, as well as a reproduction of the rare Space Ritual poster-format tour program. This comprehensive boxed set stands as the ultimate release, solidifying the status of this legendary album.
