ReuterRossi – Mumblecore Failure (2023)
The EP titled Mumblecore Failure by ReuterRossi comprises a delightful array of electronic music sounds that ebb and flow like tender waves of emotion, occasionally transforming into tonal expressions of rejection. The narrative loosely follows Sally, the young protagonist from Ida Lupino’s 1949 film “Not Wanted,” as she navigates a complex web of love and impending motherhood, torn between two men.
The ambient music is punctuated by brief excerpts from the movie, enhancing the transformative moments within the compositions. “Friendshoring,” another track on this EP, explores the harmonious yet intricate dynamics of friendship, echoing the delicate balance between familiarity and ambiguity. It emerges gradually from silence, weaving loops of expansive soundscapes and deeply mesmerizing voices and guitars into a vivid panoramic picture. Markus Reuter’s Touch Guitar mastery seamlessly complements these arrangements, offering passages that transition from gentle sounds to more robust, distorted statements.
The title, “Friendshoring,” alludes to companies that prefer working with familiar partners, valuing understanding and reliability even if it comes at a slightly higher cost. Notably, this EP is the second installment out of a series of five.
The collaboration between musicians Markus Reuter and Jean-Philippe Rossi was born during a scorching French summer in 2021. Their shared passion for experimentation fueled a creative endeavor that resulted in unexpected sonic delights. JP, armed with his Roland JD800 synthesizer, contributed a collection of intriguing notes and occasional vocal elements. These elements were then woven into Markus’ intricate looping system, undergoing mesmerizing transformations. Markus, with his Touch Guitar skills, added layers of instant compositions, infusing them with impressionistic nuances and bold creations.
