Arabs in Aspic – Pictures in a Dream (Karisma Records, 2023)
This s the re-release of Pictures in a Dream, the fourth album by Arabs in Aspic, a progressive rock band from Trondheim. Originally launched by Black Widow Records in 2013, the album was well received and paved the way for numerous performances across the European continent.
Musically eclectic, the band seamlessly weaves together influences spanning from psychedelic rock and early progressive rock to hard rock and jam-style blues progressions. You’ll find finely crafted vocals harmonies, engaging guitar parts and memorable keyboards. My ears detect echoes of Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Uriah Heep, Yes, and the early days of Black Sabbath.
The album radiates the band’s passion for sonic experimentation. The original recording featured unconventional recording techniques. The extensive use of microphones captured not only the sources but also the ambiance of the room, with a whopping nine microphones dedicated to the Hammond organ. The outcome of this audacious approach was a sound distinct from the norm in 2013. Additionally, the album includes memorable contributions from the legendary Rune Sundby, the vocalist from Ruphus, who participated in two songs.
This re-release breathes new life into the original recordings, undergoing meticulous re-editing and remixing. Addressing the challenges posed by the multitude of microphones, the vocals have been reworked, drawing from archival lyrics and introducing fresh ideas to elevate the album’s quality. Instrumental overdubs further enhance the listening experience, resulting in a more dynamic and polished rendition. To craft an enhanced listening experience, the band has also reshuffled the song sequence, infusing the album with a distinct mood compared to its initial release.
