Allen Whitman, formerly the bassist for the iconic guitarist Joe Satriani and a co-founder of the influential instrumental surf-rock trio The Mermen, has released an ambient album titled Monogatari no Fūkei. This digital-only release, available through the Squeakey Studios label, combines acoustic guitar-driven sonic landscapes with samples and synthesizers, creating evocative sounds in line with its evocative title, “Landscape Of Stories.”
Drawing inspiration from field recordings captured during a recent trip to Japan, the album weaves a captivating sound that is at times reflective and frequently dynamic. Whitman’s musical talent extends beyond his studio work; he has also made significant contributions to live theatrical performances. Notably, he has collaborated extensively with California-based Theatre of Yugen, bringing his musical expertise to the stage in a modern Noh style across cities such as San Francisco, New York City, Tokyo, and Austin.
