‘Salighet,’ Another Exceptional Album by Jordsjø

Jordsjø – Salighet (Karisma Records, 2023)

Jordsjø’s fourth studio album, Salighet, stands out as one of the most exceptional progressive rock releases of 2023. The band presents seven captivating tracks featuring masterfully crafted arrangements. Notably, Jordsjø skillfully draws inspiration from renowned progressive rock bands of different eras, folk music traditions, Nordic jazz, classical music from the 1900s, and the mind-expanding psychedelic rock of the 1960s and 70s; a magnificent fusion of influences.

Salighet features intricate guitar work, elaborate time signature changes reminiscent of Gentle Giant, enchanting vocals, and exquisite flute melodies evoking Änglagård. Additionally, listeners can revel in splendid symphonic Mellotron, vintage electric organ, enthralling synth solos, elegant piano and creative drumming, among other musical delights.

With Salighet, Jordsjø delve into various manifestations of ecstasy through both compositions and lyrics. Whether expressed in the cadence of dance, the ascent of a mountain, the narrative allure of a fairy tale, contemplations of a religious nature, or other introspective journeys, the duo unfolds a beatific symphonic progressive folk-rock masterpiece. Moreover, the music serves as a counterpoint to the monotony of everyday existence, yearning for enigma and alternate realities.

Jordsjø, from Oslo, Norway, finds inspiration in the works of Olivier Messiaen, the (German) Popol Vuh, and Anthony Braxton. They effectively weave elements of Scandinavian folklore and jazz into the fabric of early British progressive rock. In line with the rich tradition of Nordic rock from the past century, Jordsjø skillfully fuses progressive rock with captivating melodies and a folk music undertone. The band includes inventive multi-instrumentalist Håkon Oftung (known for Tusmørke, Black Magic, The Chronicles of Father Robin) and accomplished drummer Kristian Frøland.

Musicians: Håkon Oftung on vocals, guitars, flute, keyboards; and Kristian Frøland on drums & percussion.
