Amoeba Split – Quiet Euphoria (áMARXE, 2023)
Quiet Euphoria is the latest offering from the progressive music band Amoeba Split from northwestern Spain. While some have labeled them a Canterbury band, their musical identity is multifaceted, encompassing elements of both progressive rock and jazz improvisation. Personally, I tend to gravitate towards structured soundscapes rather than freeform improvisation, thus favoring their progressive rock-leaning compositions.
The album highlights include the title cut, “Quiet Euphoria,” “Shaping Shadows,” and “Divide and Conquer.”
A standout feature of Quiet Euphoria lies in the masterful keyboard work, evoking the essence of Canterbury bands alongside influences from artists such as Chick Corea and Snarky Puppy. Additionally, the vibraphone and trumpet contributions add layers of satisfaction to the ensemble’s sound. In moments of structured composition, listeners are treated to intricate arrangements, engaging solos, and the cohesive musicality of the eight-member ensemble.
Amoeba Split made their debut in 2010 with Dance of the Goodbyes and followed up in 2016 with Second Split, released under Azafrán Media.
