Belgian cinematic space-art rock band Jesus Cringe have released “Deep Need of Affection.” This is the fifth single from their forthcoming debut album on Epictronic Records. The track includes a short-film music video that relates to its themes of identity, vulnerability and human connection.
“Deep Need of Affection” also forms the acronym DNA, a reference that connects the song’s focus on affection and belonging. The idea is that the need for connection is part of human nature.
The lyrics follow a protagonist who gradually abandons emotional self-protection. The recurring line, “Then I gave up and gave even more,” presents surrender as a deliberate act of openness.
The accompanying video develops that idea through a symbolic transformation. The protagonist arrives inside a meteorite that crashes into desert dunes before he takes part in a ritual. His long hair is shaved, while the metopic sutures of his skull are tattooed onto his head to mark the acceptance of a new identity.
Three dancers later join him alongside his real-life partner and their daughter. Their choreography features patterns associated with cells, roots and DNA, with intertwined movements that reinforce the song’s connection between biology, identity and interpersonal bonds.
