Robby Steinhardt – Not in Kansas Anymore – A Prog Opera (2021)
Robby Steinhardt was the iconic violin player and vocalist for American progressive rock band Kansas. His first and only solo album is Not in Kansas Anymore – A Prog Opera. Sadly, Robby Steinhardt passed away in July 2021, before the release of this recording.
On Not in Kansas Anymore you’ll find a mix of masterfully-orchestrated progressive rock with the classic Kansas flavor along with pop-leaning AOR songs with hooks.
The highlights of the album are the full-blown progressive rock compositions. These include the symphonic intro “Tempest”; the fantastic instrumental “Rise of the Phoenix (Climb to Grace)” where Reinhardt’s masterful symphonic rock meets Mahavishnu-style fusion. This piece is a delectable musical feast, delivering stellar violin, guitar, keyboard, drum and bass performances.
The fine performances continue with the orchestral instrumental “Prelude” featuring a string ensemble combined with an electric band; and a new version of the Kansas classic “Dust in the Wind” with memorable vocal and violin work.
There is a playful tune titled Pizzacato – (A Slice for Baby Boy Flynn), where Reinhardt delights the listener with various violin techniques, including Italian-style plucking, combining classical influences with Celtic music.
Additional high points include the fiery “Not in Kansas Anymore” and the anthemic instrumental “A Prayer for Peace” which is a bonus track.
Acclaimed producer Michael Franklin, brought in a fabulous lineup of progressive rock, classic rock and jazz fusion guest musicians including Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull on flute; guitarist Steve Morse of Deep Purple/Dixie Dregs; drummer Billy Cobham of Mahavishnu Orchestra; keyboardist Patrick Moraz; vocalist Bobby Kimball of Toto; pianist Chuck Leavell (Allman Brothers Band, Sea Level); drummer Liberty Devitto; guitarist Jim Gentry; guitarist Pat Travers; drummer Billy Ashbaugh (Moody Blues/Pat Benatar); Lisa Fischer (longtime vocalist for The Rolling Stones); keyboardist Michael Franklin; Tommy Calton; bassist guitarist Tim Franklin; drummer Rayford Griffin; and more.
