The album cover for The Hemulic Voluntary Band features four anthropomorphic, mole-like creatures dressed in white robes, each playing a different musical instrument—keyboard, electric guitar, drum, and mandolin. They stand in front of a moss-covered stone wall, beneath a banner bearing the album title in stylized medieval lettering. The foreground is filled with mushrooms and plants, while a twilight sky and murky pond complete the scene. The artwork is signed by illustrator Javier Herbozo.

Ritual’s The Hemulic Voluntary Band Marches Onto Vinyl

Ritual’s fourth studio album, The Hemulic Voluntary Band, will be reissued on August 15, 2025 via Karisma Records. Originally released in 2007 on CD only, the album has been newly remastered by Hans Fredriksson and will be available once again on CD and for the first time ever on vinyl.

Named after a fictional brass band from Tove Jansson’s Moomin universe, the album combines elements of folk, symphonic rock, and 1970s-style progressive rock. While not a concept album, it draws thematic unity from literary references and a recurring sense of wonder.

Critics have praised The Hemulic Voluntary Band for its inventive arrangements. Balancing complexity with accessibility, it highlights Ritual’s ability to craft intricate yet melodic compositions. Widely regarded as a modern classic in the Swedish progressive rock scene, this reissue offers longtime fans and new listeners alike a fresh chance to experience its richly imaginative sound.
