Dwiki Dharmawan – Anagnorisis (Moonjune, 2025)
Dwiki Dharmawan, Indonesian composer and instrumentalist, plays piano with the ardor of a true improviser, and he shines as both musical architect and risk-taker. Anagnorisis (recognition in Greek), features Israeli-born saxophonist Gilad Atzmon (Robert Wyatt, Pink Floyd) and a sharp Greek quartet, Kimon Karoutzos, Harris Lambrakis, Vironas Ntolas, and Nikos Sidirokastritis. They present a fine set of originals and open forms that invite real conversation.
Although “Gambang Ney” hints at Indonesian melodic and rhythmic influences, most of the material centers on contemporary jazz. Bebop, blues, and free-jazz run through the album. Dharmawan’s piano leads with wit and elegance, while Atzmon’s dominating saxophone commands the front line. Even so, the ensemble members have opportunities to step forward at the right moment, giving them room to stand out.
Musicians: Dwiki Dharmawan on piano; Gilad Atzmon on clarinet, sax; Kimon Karoutzos on upright bass; Harris Lambrakis on ney flute; Vironas Ntolas on electric guitar;and Nikos Sidirokastritis on drums.
