Hackett and Rothery to Release Collaborative Album ‘The Roaring Waves’

Steve Hackett of Genesis and Steve Rothery of Marillion will release their first collaborative album, The Roaring Waves, on August 28, 2026, on InsideOutMusic.

The instrumental record features seven tracks inspired by the sea, a theme connected to Rothery’s childhood experiences in Whitby, England.

In winter you could hear the roaring of the waves during the stormy weather,” Rothery said. “Whitby was a very evocative place to live, a very poetic and powerful place to grow up.”

Although discussion about a joint project dates back more than a decade, the album took nearly eight years to complete. Commitments to touring and their respective careers often prevented the pair from working together for extended periods.

Nevertheless, sessions at the Racket Club and their home studios gradually produced the material that became The Roaring Waves. According to Hackett, the creative process relied on a straightforward and collaborative approach.

It was a bit old school, our approach,” Hackett said. “Like the idea of mates getting together in the garage and playing and hanging out.”
