Solstice – New Life (2026 Remaster)
The 2026 remaster of New Life brings renewed definition, depth, and clarity to Solstice’s excellent and timeless 1993 album. Originally released almost a decade after the band’s 1984 debut, the record captures Solstice at a distinctive creative crossroads. In essence, a place where progressive symphonic rock meets English folk, jazz-rock, and other elements.
Bandleader Andy Glass remains the central instrumental voice. His inventive, magnetic, and spectacular electric guitar delivers finely crafted melodies as well as muscular, eloquent solos. Marc Elton’s stirring violin proves equally crucial as a genuine melodic counterweight. Elton’s inventive violin is capable of lyrical grace, fusion energy, and flashes of jazz sophistication. Notably, Heidi Kemp’s delightful lead vocals give the album much of its emotional character. Meanwhile, the drums and bass bend rhythms into surprising shapes, mixing prog-rock, and jazz fusion techniques.
“Morning Light” opens the album with engaging vocals, keyboards, guitar, and an assured electric guitar solo. The lengthy “Guardian” suite features gorgeous vocals, layered harmonies, rhythmic pivots, prominent violin, and expressive, epic electric guitar.
“The Sea” offers a tranquil instrumental interlude, built around the elegant dialogue between violin and guitar. Meanwhile, the title track, “New Life,” features lead violin lines, toe-tapping beats, a memorable hook, and soulful vocals.
“Pathways” ventures into more intricate territory. Asymmetric meters, jazz-infused exchanges, incisive violin, substantial guitar solos, and sophisticated vocal harmonies reveal the band’s progressive instincts at their most detailed. The fiddle and guitar work remind me a little of the Dixie Dregs meeting Jean-Luc Ponty, while the vocal harmonies have deep Yes influences.
“Journey,” the original album’s closing track, is another long piece with a dreamy intro. It builds very nicely with charming, expressive vocals and more of the galvanizing interaction between guitar and violin. As you would expect, the band provides an appropriately grand finale with a deeply satisfying final surge.
Two live bonus tracks, “Morning Light” and “New Life,” extend the reissue beyond the original material. Recorded in 2023 and 2026 by the current Solstice lineup, which includes Jess Holland, they reveal how naturally these compositions adapt to a later incarnation of the band. More than thirty years after their creation, the songs still possess effective melodies and enough interpretive freedom to withstand new voices and new performances.
