Jane Getter Premonition – Anomalia (Esoteric Recordings, 2021)

I was looking forward to the new album from guitarist Jane Getter and her band. She is one of the few high profile female instrumentalists in progressive rock. Unfortunately, from the very beginning, Anomalia takes a wrong turn towards hard rock and tiresome prog metal.

Getter is at her best when she solos and delivers excellent guitars licks as well as superb interplay with keyboardist Adam Holzman. The keyboard work is fantastic and solidly in progressive rock territory.

The highlights in Anomalia are the songs where the heavy guitars are minimal such as the delightful “Alien Refugee,” the marvelous “Still Here” where fusion and progressive rock meets innovative sound design; the epic progression on “Disappear”; and the acoustic guitar instrumental “Safe House.”

The lineup includes Jane Getter on guitars; Adam Holzman on keyboards; Alex Skolnick on guitar; Chad Wackerman on drums; Mark Egan on bass; Gene Lake on drums; Stu Hamm on bass; Vernon Reid on guitar; Randy McStine on vocals; and Chanda Rule on vocals.
