Existentia – The Planet in the Universe
Existentia, from Kursk, Russia, released their debut album, The Planet in the Universe, on May 9th, 2021. The band is made up of: Anton Mityugin, on bass; Igor Drozdov, on drums; Alexander Sidelin, on guitars; Miroslava Mirova, on keyboards, and Maya Gitsina, on lead vocals. Famous Dream Theater keyboardist, Derek Sherinian, guest keyboards on the opening track, “Prelude”.
The band states, about their debut album, “This is our first album about Mother Earth and her place in the universe. We tried to show musically and by lyrics how important it is to save our planet in the universe. It is first nowadays goal for humanity”.
This album is a great introduction to Existensia. Every song is a solid rocker, with “Black Swan”, “Ghost Valley”, and “Cool Summer Rain”, the real standouts. The opener “Prelude”, does get things off to a great start. Anything Derek Sherinian plays on also is elevated, but the band supports well.
Their music is straight ahead metal, without much symphonic or progressive influence. I would compare them to early Dream Theater, maybe. A little like When Dream and Day Unite, without the big hit like “The Killing Hand”. A more level album, with all songs of good caliber, no powerful lead song, but no fillers or duds. Just solid rock, as Dire Straits used to sing. The female vocals are sharp, but without the ability to rise above the music. Unemotional and straight ahead rocking, but not outstanding or adding another element to the music.
Happy to find another good female fronted metal bands. This one is now on my list. Good work Existentia on this debut album. We will watch for more of your future releases.
