Evenflow – "Mediterraneo" EP

Evenflow – “Mediterraneo” EP

One of my favorite Italian bands, Evenflow, is back with a new EP, Mediterraneo, that will be released on October 3, 2022. When I read about it, I just had to review it. Thankfully, Pietro Paolo Lunesu is a friend, and was able to send me the demo before the release date.

Evenflow is from Sassari, Sardinia, in Italy. They have been actively recording music since 2000. They have released two full length albums, Life Has Just Begun, in 2017; and Ancient Memories, in 2011. They have also released three other EPs Dream Weaver, in 2008; Mother in 2019; and Flower Paths in 2013; as well as several singles.

The band is made up of members: Pietro Paolo Lunesu, on guitars; Giorgio Lunesu, on drums; Marco Pastorino, on vocals; and Luca Negro, on bass. Alessandro Bertoni plays all keyboards.

Lyrically, the EP speaks of love, hope, sadness, and joy for the future. Guitarist Pietro Paolo Lunesu explains the record in further detail: “The five songs that make up Mediterraneo are gloriously uplifting anthems that draw you from your world of cares and worries into an exhilarating musical realm of dreams. The songs are concise and finely honed, yet seem to contain an ever-expanding universe to explore within their duration. For example, the title track, ‘Mediterraneo’, is perhaps the EPs crowning glory, building through multiple layers, each more captivating than the last, but in truth every note from the first bombastic chords that usher in opener ‘Ocean Lies’ to the final spiraling guitar solo of ‘Mediterraneo’ is sheer melodic, progressive metal perfection.”, Pietro adds, “I thought of opening the EP ”Mediterraneo” with “Ocean Lies” because I considered it the most powerful, but at the same time with a great musical balance characterized by a softer part and a part a bit Latin in the guitar solo section. Lyrically, the song represents at times, the desolation of the world, but at the same time thinking optimistically for the future.”

The EP was immaculately mixed and mastered by Michele Guaitoli, of Visions of Atlantis and Temperance; with spectacular artwork by Mickael Briot of Mythrid Art, (Nightmare).

Even Flow has done multiple tours across Europe and has supported bands such as Serious Black, Firewind, Eluveitie, Iron Savior, Katatonia, Orphaned Land, Katatonia, Pain of Salvation, among many more. Even Flow is recommended for fans of Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Stratovarius, Angra, and Queensrÿche.

“Ocean Lies”, jumps out at you full force, with drums, guitar bass and orchestration filling the air. Marco Pastorino, from the band Temperance, roars full-throated vocals, “There’s a reason to believe! There’s a reason to go on! You can’t always get what you want. Lost in time”. (Mick Jagger will appreciate that line). The music is stunning and amazing. It roars full bast and keeps the power flowing endlessly. What a way to kick off Mediterraneo!

“Ray of Light”, opens slower, with deep bass and electric guitar, before Pastorino sings, “You are a ray of light. Waiting for a new sun. I’m always in your arms. On the way to paradise. Here tonight, no promise. Will be broken in my sigh. Even flow doesn’t stop the sun. I am reading the lights of your curves, and the whisper…sign of your desire. So, you feel the rhythm of the sun!” Excellent lyrics and powerful Dream Theater – like rhythms with blasting drums and starlight guitar work. Two excellent songs to open the EP. Pastorino is a fantastic addition to this band. The partnership with Temperance, including Luca Negro, on bass, was a brilliant move.

Alessandro Bertoni’s piano playing, which opens “Leaves”, is wonderful, just before Pastorino sings, “When in a lie you were just one time, without an inner sound”. Then, an almost Keith Emerson piano interlude, before, Pastorino continues, “No one cares. And no one lies to you. These are the times”. “The price I’d pay for brighter days. Don’t leave my eyes again”. “Your warm embrace. Look around. Believe in what you see. The kingdom is the heart. The promised land can be here.  I don’t know. If Heaven’s here on earth”. Excellent lyrics full of deep feeling and meaning. Excellent musicianship supporting.

“Revelation Day”, opens with Pietro Paolo’s excellent electric guitar playing, along with those powerful drums, and consistent bass. The piano adds meaningful variety to mix. Then Pastorino sings, “I’m a stranger to the sun. You come through my door. Be the light of my life. A thousand years, a thousand more. A thousand times a million doors to eternity. Don’t you hear what I am trying to say. When you live so many miles away. Morning is coming. Morning is on its way. It’s revelation day”. Excellent, yeah….

“Mediterraneo”, is the best track on the EP. The orchestration and keyboards that open the song will prepare you well for what is to come. The drumming is the best on the album. The guitar work is stellar and memorable. Pastorino sings, “You took me by surprise. When you hurt my pride, it cut me deep inside. And now she’s gone. The silence seems to be eating away at me. Running through the night.

You own the feel in my dreams. Concealing your crimes behind a grandeur of lies.

These rippling waves have taken away my wish. When I feel the empathy. Don’t you ever say my name. So, I can see”. The guitar work and instrumental music that follows is eye opening and brilliant.

Evenflow, never disappoints. With Michele Guaitoli, of Visions of Atlantis and Temperance helping to master this album and the addition of the Temperance band members, this band will continue to rise. They are speaking with a much louder voice and their music is developing in strides. The Lunesu brothers were an excellent core band, but they have added to their magic and wisdom with their collaborations, and I expect even better things in their future. Get this EP and enjoy it, while we await the full-length epic concept album which is surely in their bright future.
