Attractive Chaos will release their first music, on April 12th, 2023, The Fire Between Us! Their first effort; an EP, is a wonderful first chance to greet and hear this wonderful act. The line-up includes some famous musicians and one of the best female singers in music, right now. Emma Elvaston, (Beneath My Sins), is that woman, and she sings all lead vocals. Pietro Paolo Lunesu, (Even Flow), plays bass and sings backing vocals; Clément Botz, (Beneath My Sins), plays lead guitars and provides all of the growls; Thomas Calegari plays the drums.
The band is hitting the road soon on tour with some other heavy metal hitters, Phantom Elite and Temperance. The tour runs throughout Europe, from the middle of March through April 2023. That is one hell of a ticket, so don’t miss it.
Until then, pick up this album and get a taste of what you will hear on stage.
The band describes the theme of the album as, “The intricacies of love can consume us, as we lose our sense of reality and our dreams are transformed by the dances of the heart. We spin, bewildered by our ever-changing roles in the passion play. We burn in the flames of desire and freeze in the cold ashes they can leave behind. So many doors to choose from and so many of them lead to nowhere, to a nothingness more powerful than pain. Yet the music never fails to entice and entrance, because behind one of those countless doorways lies a joy and peace supreme; a hand that will unwind the shroud the world has bound you in and allow your light to shine”. Wow, well said, indeed.
“Before You Hit The Ground”, opens this spectacular adventure in the art and discovery of love. And it starts with fiery lead electric guitar and heavy bass, augmented well with excellent drums. I had just finished listening to Dream Theatre’s Awake, before starting this review, and I was amazed to hear the spectacular opening of The Fire Between Us, take me right back. It reminded me a little of The Mirror/Lie, which is one hell of a way to start! But unlike hearing the voice of James LaBrie, we get to hear Emma Elvaston’s voice instead. She sings, “We’ve always been close to each other, our story has always been singularity”. Yes, how much do we share at the beginning of a relationship? Fear gets in the way, and can ruin things from the start. Fear to share too much openly, too soon. Easily one of the best songs musically on the album. A real Dream Theatre-like presentation of elite musicianship.
“Won And Lost”, also has a stunning opening; this time with more wonderful keyboards and orchestration. This is more of a showcase for Emma Elvaston’s voice. Clément Botz, provides some cool growls to add to the dramatic and theatric feel to this song. But Emma rockets her voice to the stars on this one. She competes well with those dynamic electric guitars from Clément Botz. The bass from Pietro Paolo Lunesu, accentuates the rhythm well. But this is Emma’s, ‘Freddie Mercury moment’, and she gives it her all. You just have to hear this one to feel and understand it.
“Come To Me”, was the EP’s first single; (and there is a music video to support it), introducing us to this band and the album to come. Emma Elvaston is given full control of stage, or she just takes it…with much quieter musical accompaniment, some of the time. And those moments are precious and wonderful. She really is another of the best discoveries of a year, that is quickly turning into an epic year of discovery, of new talent, for me. She has the perfect, elegance and sophistication in her voice, which you rarely hear in female metal bands, these days. She is not out to out-growl the men. Comfortable and confident instead, to knock your ears out with beauty. Oh yes, she can sing loudly, but it is her delicate delivery that fascinates.
“Still Here Both”, opens with beautiful piano. The likes of which, bring me back to Dream Theater’s Images and Words. Not exactly as dramatic as “Wait for Sleep”, but just as dreamy. Emma Elvaston really claims the stage as her own here. Her voice shines above the piano and orchestration. Like a rocket she does soar! The song benefits from a melodious guest vocal from Mario Del Rio Escobedo, (Erszebeth, The Dark Star Calling, Alia Tempora). His voice provides a perfect accompaniment to Emma’s. Mario sings in Spanish as well, giving this song a special gift of magic.
“As You Are”, is another melodious metal rock song. And Emma sings, “Be proud of who you are!” A fight and inspiration song full of heavy Dream Theatre-like guitars, bass, keyboards, orchestration, and drums.
“The Storm”, opens with some really cool lead electric guitars and orchestration. This one brings back the feel and power of Dream Theatre’s The Mirror/Lie. Mario Del Rio Escobedo, returns to duet with Emma, to create an epic album closer. The guitars, bass and drums are formidable! A storm filled epic closer. The drums bring back memories of “Pull Me Under”, and that is a wonderful thing to hear.
The Fire Between Us is adorned in the artwork of Mickaël Briot of Mythrid Art, (Even Flow, In Defilade, Nightmare). The album was mixed and polished well by Simone Mularoni, (Deathless Legacy, Elvenking, LucaTurilli’s Rhapsody etc).
WOW! Sometimes less, really is more! The Fire Between Us, has enough impact and power as many of the full-length albums I have listened to, over the years. Attractive Chaos created all the perfect tracks, and probably said, “enough, sufficientemente, abbastanza”!
Keep up the good work. More, more, more! Bravo! What an EP! Can you imagine a full-length album to follow this? I’m in!
