M-Opus - At The Mercy Of Manannán

M-Opus Master the Art of Progressive Rock

M-Opus – At The Mercy of Manannán (self-release, 2023)

M-Opus is a superb Irish progressive rock band that is set to release one of the best albums of 2023 so far. “At The Mercy Of Manannán” delivers symphonic progressive rock at its best. M-Opus has all the right ingredients, from engaging lead vocals and beautiful harmonies to masterful arrangements, epic builds, and dazzling instrumental work. I specially enjoyed the skillful guitars and keyboard work. The band’s keyboardist, Jonathan Casey, uses an impressive arsenal of instruments, from electric organ and majestic Mellotron sounds to synth solos.

Led by screen composer Jonathan Casey of David Cross Band, the group has a unique approach to their craft, releasing concept albums inspired by specific years in music history to create an imaginary stylistic discography. Having already released their 1975 and 1978 albums, the band is now presenting their 1972 work.

“At The Mercy Of Manannán” is a nautical adventure that chronicles a crew of sailors on a perilous journey, encountering Celtic deities. In Irish mythology, Manannán was the sea god and King Of The Otherworld. The album was written and recorded during the lockdown and served as an escape for lyricist Casey, who envisioned the project as an adventure. One track, “Na Brúidaí,” is performed entirely in the Irish language of Gaeilge.

According to Jonathan, “It was an unusual process for me. I was introduced to the guitarist PJ just before COVID, but it was an online introduction, so we didn’t actually get to meet in person for a very long time. While isolated in lockdown, we wrote most of the album together, but apart, emailing each other files. At one point, Mark caught COVID and had to be isolated from his family. So, he took shelter in his studio and recorded the drums on the album right then and there!”

M-Opus comprises Mark Grist on drums; PJ O’Connell on guitars; Colin Sullivan on guitars; and Jonathan Casey on vocals, keyboards, and bass. James Dunne has recently joined the group on bass, and they are now rehearsing for live performances. The band has created a video for song “Valley Of Elah” in support of their new release.

Furthermore, Jonathan is preparing for a live performance of “Larks Tongues In Aspic” with David Cross, where he will play guitar and handle vocal duties for the David Cross band.
