Analogue Productions will release a new edition of Miles Davis’ Kind Of Blue on October 31. The 180-gram double LP pairs a 33 1/3 RPM program with Side 4 cut at 45 RPM. Standard black vinyl joins a limited blue variant of 1,500 copies available exclusively through Acoustic Sounds.
The set draws from the original Classic Records parts mastered by Bernie Grundman directly from the original master tape. The pressing addresses the long-noted speed problem on the 1959 recording’s first three tracks—“So What,” “Freddie Freeloader,” and “Blue In Green”—caused by Columbia’s 3-track recorder running slow, restoring correct pitch and tempo.
Packaging includes a heavyweight Stoughton “tip-on” gatefold jacket with a scuff-resistant matte finish and a four-panel insert outlining the speed correction, plus liner notes by the late critic Robert Palmer. Side 4 features the alternate take of “Flamenco Sketches” at 45 RPM.
The album, recorded in 1959 with John Coltrane (tenor saxophone), Julian “Cannonball” Adderley (alto saxophone), Bill Evans (piano), Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Jimmy Cobb (drums), remains a perennial bestseller and a cornerstone of jazz and world music discourse.
