Ambient Pioneer Meets Overtone Ritual In A Cross-Cultural Journey

Steve Roach & Soriah – Curandero (Projekt, 2025)

Ambient electronic artist Steve Roach and throat singer/ritual performer Soriah announce Curandero (healer), their first collaborative album. The project mixes Roach’s spellbinding tribal-ambient electronic sound design with Soriah’s harmonic overtone vocals and ritual elements, aiming for an immersive, trance-leaning experience rooted in world music traditions.

The title references curanderos, folk healers whose practices draw on plant medicine and spiritual knowledge, reflecting Roach’s experience living in Baja Arizona for many years. Soriah’s studies in Tuvan throat singing (khöömei) and his international performance background provides the album’s vocal approach.

The music is curative, deep shadow work on the cusp between sound healing and esoteric shamanic exorcism,” Soriah said. Roach added, “Curandero offers a power spot between the worlds; a portal is opened to where the invisible becomes tangible and integrative.”

The album was recorded and mixed at the Timehouse (Baja Arizona), the Shaman Perch (Portland, Oregon), and the Grand Hotel Ulaangom (Mongolia). Interwoven trance rhythms, atmospheric electronics, and overtone singing explore connections between natural environments and altered states.

Steve Roach : various analog and digital synths, sequencers, electric and acoustic percussion, drum machines, prehispanic flutes; SoRIAH : throat singing (Khöömei), Aztec death whistle, Indonesian bamboo flute, Synth One, SpaceCraft, Tuvan drum, shaman drum, acoustic percussion, 42-inch Dark Star Gong.
