Puccini Meets Piano Trio: Roy Powell Steps Forward With Aria

Roy Powell, Lorenzo Feliciati and Lucrezio De Seta have released Aria (Losen Records, 2025). Roy Powell has spent decades performing contemporary jazz from the sidelines. British-born and long based in Norway, he first drew wide attention as a key pianist in Anthony Braxton’s European ensembles, then became part of Oslo’s electric jazz movement alongside Bugge Wesseltoft and Nils Petter Molvær. Versatility has remained his hallmark, whether navigating abstract forms or focusing his playing in blues.

Aria marks a notable shift. Powell places his name on the cover of an acoustic trio release, joined by longtime collaborators Lorenzo Feliciati on bass and Lucrezio de Seta on drums. Feliciati brings a background that includes progressive rock, jazz fusion, and extensive session work, while Rome-based de Seta is known for moving fluently between jazz, rock, and crossover projects. Together, the trio reimagines arias by Giacomo Puccini as frameworks for jazz improvisation, complemented by three Powell originals.

Throughout the album, de Seta works with brushes, space, and timing, while Feliciati provides a warm, agile, articulate foundation.

Musicians: Roy Powell on piano; Lorenzo Feliciati on bass; and Lucrezio De Seta on drums.
