Tangerine Dream - Cyclone

Cyclone, Tangerine Dream Introduces Vocals

Cyclone(1978, 2019 Virgin Records reissue)

Cyclone” was the 11th major release and 8th studio album by the German electronic music band Tangerine Dream. It was released in 1978 and marked a significant departure from their previous work, as it was the first album in their discography to feature proper vocals and lyrics.

The album’s cover art is a painting by the band’s leader and founder, Edgar Froese. Despite being a departure from their usual instrumental sound, the album was well-received by critics and was successful commercially, reaching number 37 on the UK album charts. This album was considered a turning point for the band’s career.

Although Tangerine Dream kept its electronic foundation, the addition of vocals, flute, and drums gave it a progressive space rock feel. Notable, the original rock song mode gradually morphs into the familiar mesmerizing sequencer sections intertwined with horns, fiery flutes, voices, and synth solos.

Personnel: Edgar Froese on synthesizers, Mellotron, Moog synthesizer, electric guitars, acoustic guitar; Christopher Franke – Moog, music sequencer, Mellotron, synthesizers, electronic drum; Steve Jolliffe on vocals, flute, piccolo, cor anglais, bass clarinet, Hohner clavinet, synthesizers, grand piano, Fender Rhodes, electric violin, tenor horns, soprano horns, lyricon; Klaus Krüger on polyester custom-built drums with multi-trigger unit, electronic drum, Paiste cymbals, bubims, Burma gong set.
